Kamień papieski na Błoniach Kraków

The Papal Rock at Błonia Park, Krakow

Duży granitowy kamień z napisem

al. 3 Maja, 30-962 Kraków Tourist region: Kraków i okolice

Next to 3 Maja Avenue, at the edge of Krakow’s Błonia Park, the largest meadow in Europe located almost in the city centre (almost 50 ha) lies a large grey rock.
It is a block of granite, weighing 26 tons and brough there from the vicinity of Morskie Oko Lake in the Tatra Mountains. It was placed here in 1997 to commemorate the 19th anniversary of the inauguration of Pope John Paul II’s pontificate, as a symbol of the Polish Pope’s meetings with the believers. Błonia Park was the site of grand papal masses conducted during Pope’s pilgrimages to Poland in 1979, 1983, 1997 and 2002. During his last visit to Poland about 2.5 million people attended the mass! After the Polish Pope’s death, the White March of mourners walked to the rock, where a thanks giving mass was said for the entire life of John Paul II. A year later, Karol Wojtyła’s successor on Peter’s Throne in Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI met with worshippers on Błonia.
